This city is a great base for travel to other places in Nicaragua; like inside Matagalpa (El Tuma, La Dalia), and to neighboring department territories Jinotega, Nueva Segovias and Madriz. Matagalpa is at a relatively 2hour-driving distance from the Nicaragua-Honduras border and similarly from Managua.
